Yellow Roses

I’m not really much of a flower person. But I will admit that I’ve always loved yellow roses. When I was a kid my gramps was an amazing gardener, and he managed to cultivate roses in the front of grams’ house, in spite of the unrelenting tropical weather. These were beautiful, but they were never yellow. And frankly, while my mom and grams were always delighted with them, I was never impressed. When I came back to the United States after graduating high school and saw yellow roses, I was amazed at their unique beauty. For the first time ever, I discovered I loved roses–yellow roses.

Now I have not had a lot of opportunity to enjoy yellow roses in my life. We’ve moved so many times, that even though I’ve tried planting them occasionally I’ve never been around to enjoy them for long. However, I’ll never forget the time I received a dozen yellow roses, delivered to my dorm room in Bible School by my sweet boyfriend, Joel. They were a peace offering after he had forgotten to pick me up for an event we were supposed to attend together. In truly humble (and clever) fashion he won my forgiveness by a public display of yellow roses. I was the envy of the whole girls’ dorm!

We’ve never done much for each other for Valentine’s Day, but on the several occasions while Joel was in prison and I was alone, I still felt an acute emptiness. Now that he’s been home a couple years, we’re back to not doing much, and I’m OK with that.  Isn’t it interesting how quickly we slip back into comfortable habits? Still I can’t deny my immense delight when Joel arrived home this afternoon with a bouquet of roses–yellow roses. They hold a special kind of beauty that speaks volumes to my soul! Yellow Roses, my favorite
