Want What You Have

Marshall and I were talking in the car today about wanting things we can’t have. Marshall observed, “Yea, it seems like it’s better to want what you already have.” I affirmed this observation wholeheartedly. God has been reminding me over and over again, how much we do have to be thankful for.

In our culture it is easy to allow our eyes and our hearts to wonder towards those things we don’t have.  Before long, I can become wrapped up in the desiring of those things, even good things, that are not mine. And at least for me, that leads to one royal pity party, as I begin to mourn all the things I’m missing out on.

I have a friend who suggests that spraying Windex on a delectable goody will remove that goody from being a temptation to you.  I have actually seen her spray Windex on a snack she didn’t want to be tempted to eat, and she was right! It worked. No one wanted to eat it after that. She makes a good point…temptation must be avoided by purposeful action.

When I find myself longing for those things I don’t have, and mourning my present lot, I have to avoid that pitfall with purposeful action. This evening as I was driving home from the grocery store at nearly eight o’clock, I faced the ever present temptation, of self-pity. Suddenly it hit me how often this insidious sin sneaks into my thinking process and robs me of the joy of my Savior. As I cried out to God, He reminded me gently of those who have so much less than I do, and yet serve Him with unwavering devotion and joy. He showed me how much I have to be thankful for, and how often I take those things for granted. When I am tempted to feel ripped off or slighted, I have to purposefully choose thankfulness; for it is truly God’s Windex. Spray it on generously and the temptation of self-pity dissipates.

    • Sometimes I honestly write things, and wonder why I wrote them, and even feel a bit silly after I post them, but then God reminds me, it is because this is His project and He is using me to minister to and bless others. Thank you for being a part of that reminder. My own foolishness, becomes the platform for God to showcase His awesomeness!
