What is My Name?

When I was a kid I thought it was cool to have special names for each of my friends and family. I nicknamed by siblings by their middle names. I sometimes still confuse people when I call my brother George. Each friend had their own special name. Even my grandparents received personalized names. It was my way of showing endearment. People who were close to me, who mattered most to me in life, should know it. Each unique name was my way of demonstrating that I valued them.

Recently I read this verse in Revelation and it struck a chord with me: “I will also give that person a white stone with a new namewritten on it, known only to the one who receives it.” (Revelation 2:17) It was as if Jesus were whispering to my heart, “I have a special name for you too. One day I’m going to give you a white stone with my own special name for you written on it. And when you see it, you’ll know exactly what it is and what it means.”

I can’t help but wonder, “What is my name?” As I considered this, I thought about the author of Revelation, John the apostle. In his gospel, John only ever referred to himself as “the one Jesus loves.” He did not identify himself apart from belonging to Jesus.  I wondered if he was waiting for his new name too. And in the meantime, he was simply happy to be known as “the one Jesus loves.” That seems like a pretty good identity. One I can live with too, while I wait.
