The Hard Pathways

I read these verse this morning in Psalms 65: “…You are the hope of everyone on earth…Even the hard pathways overflow with abundance.” (vv. 5, 11) What a beautiful picture, and a precious reminder to me.

Because truly, even though I know my only hope is found in God, often I resort to hoping for stability in this life. Of course I have good reason to hope for a long and precious future here on earth for our family. On the other hand we face many obstacles and no out come is guaranteed. Often as I peer ahead into our future, I find my hope wavering.

And that is when I am reminded that my ultimate hope must always be in God my Savior. For, let’s face it, some days the hard pathways seem anything but abundant. Rather they seem long, and dull, and rugged, and well, hard! It’s difficult to imagine that hard can bring about beauty and abundance. I am shortsighted and easily side tracked. I am overwhelmed, and often seek the comfort of sufficient, rather than the pleasures of abundance.

Reading this passage this morning, reminded me of C.S. Lewis’s claim that we are “far to easily satisfied.” God promises abundance, not status quo. When our hope is in Him, even the hard paths become roads of gracious bounty.
