The God Who Holds our Breath

“…And the God who holds your breath in His hand and owns all your ways, you have not glorified.” This was Daniel’s indictment of Belshazzar, Nebuchadnezzar’s successor to the throne of Babylon. Wow! What a shame, to have knowledge of the one true God, and not glorify Him.

What hits me right in the gut when I read this verse, is Daniel’s description of God. He is the one who holds our breath in His hands. I know that is true, but often I live my life as if it’s not…as if I am in control, when the truth is that with every breath, I should be acknowledging and glorifying the One who gives me that breath. God designed us to be totally dependent on Him in every way, whether we are aware of that dependence or not. He holds the breath of the wicked in his hand, just as He does the righteous.

I am reminded of the phrase, “I’m holding my breath!” as a euphemism for great anticipation. But in this case, God holds our breath in great anticipation that we worship Him.

I can go all day without acknowledging Him consciously, but my body is acknowledging Him each time I suck in life-giving air. My very existence is an acknowledgement of the Great Designer. What a waste it is, to miss out on the gift of consciously recognizing and worshiping my Creator.
