The Exchange

I wrote this poem as a reflection on Ezekiel 36:26. In my study of the Spirit and his constant work in our lives as believers, I’ve been really challenged and encouraged with the understanding that our hearts which were once so impervious to the things of the Spirit, are now malleable in His hands. As Philippians 2:13 says, “It is God working in us giving us the desire and power to do what pleases him.”

A heart of stone within me,
Beat a hard and cold staccato,
Bearing out my own aspirations,
“My way” was my motto.
Cold and indifferent was my heart,
Inflexible, in-malleable, and rough,
Stony, impenetrable fortress,
I was determined to be tough.
No outside source could reach,
That deadened heart within,
Until my own Creator came,
To do battle with my sin.
He took on a heart of flesh,
And then let it bleed for me.
Hanging all alone and cursed,
Abandoned on the tree.
His sacrifice my cold heart touched,
He reached into my chest,
His gift the stone did crush,
And gave me a heart of flesh.
Stone tablets once held His law,
Now it’s written within me,
God’s justice has been satisfied,
His gift has set me free.
For that cold and stony heart inside,
Had bound me as a slave.
Pride had built my fortress,
And insisted I be brave.
But when Christ exchanged my heart,
With one softened by His grace,
I saw that with His blood,
All my sin He had erased.
A heart of flesh within me,
Now beats a staccato of praise.
Till one day I see His glory,
And upon His face I gaze.

  • Jesus preached often from Ezekiel. The only real life in Christ is an Exchanged Life. Great verse, Tabitha! It would also look neat set in 18th century Caslon, with the old tall “s” (the one that looks like an “f”), and run it by Letterpress on hand made paper.
