The Cyclical Nature of Kingdom Investment

“Lay up for yourselves treasure in heaven…for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” God has been working on me recently, teaching me again about treasure. What do I truly treasure? What do I find most valuable? And whatever my answer to those questions are–do my actions verify that answer?

What I am learning is that this truth is cyclical in nature. What I mean is as we obey God and store up treasure in heaven, by virtue of using whatever gifts, talents, or wealth He has bestowed upon us to further His kingdom, we begin to cherish Him and His will more. Our heart follows our treasure. We may give time, energy or even finances and when we do, our sense of appreciation, our value for Christ himself increases! On the other hand, as we treasure Christ above all else, our earthly gifts, talents, and “treasures” will naturally flow toward His kingdom objectives. “Your kingdom come…your will be done” becomes the genuine plea of our hearts.

Sometimes giving and serving are a real and natural joy and sometimes I am just a little too caught up with my own needs and concerns to find delight in giving. But the bottom line is it doesn’t really matter which way I feel about investing in the kingdom. The reality is that as I treasure Jesus I will obey Him, and as I obey Him I will treasure Him.
