Sometimes Good Things come in Big Packages

“What in the world is that?” I mused, pulling into our yard on Friday. On the front step was a huge box. I mentally assessed my recent online shopping–no I had not made any large purchases. It was nothing I had expected that was for certain. I just love surprises! Hauling the box into the house I searched the drawers for a knife to open it. At my cries of delight the boys emerged from all corners to partake in my delight. The box was full of wrapped packages, candy, treats, cards and letters. It was from a precious group of ladies at a church in Wisconsin where I shared my testimony last fall.

The boys and I tore into the cards; I insisted the presents had to be saved until Christmas. What joy! What delight! How overwhelming! Reading precious notes of love, support, and prayers renewed my spirit. These ladies were so excited to be used by God to demonstrate love to us in our neediness. Jesus was in those notes whispering of His very personal care.  With great  anticipation we unpacked the box, placing the mounds of presents under our tree, and filling a jar with some of the candy.

I am still dumbfounded even as I share this experience with you! What overwhelms me is God’s immeasurable kindness and generosity to provide so abundantly for us. I am moved by His intimate participation in our lives, and His delight in giving to us above and beyond what we need.

This week end we were blessed to be receivers of a special gift, a reminder of God’s tender care. Next week end, we get to be the givers of a special gift, a reminder to others of God’s tender care. The ministry that the boys and I participate in for inner city kids is having their Christmas party next week end. Marshall and I have been collecting gifts to pass out to the kids. Yesterday afternoon we sat at our kitchen table filling stockings and tying bows on boxes.

This week end God has reminded me yet again that as members of the body of Christ we are not called to be merely recipients of His grace and goodness but conduits through which they flow. We have received through others and we pass it on to others. How humbling and exciting to be a part of  God’s unsearchable plans.
