Set Like Stone

Isaiah 50:7 says, “Because the Sovereign Lord helps me I will not be disgraced. Therefore I have set my face like a stone, determined to do His will and I know I will not be put to shame.”  My family is dealing with yet another “water-shed moment” in which we face the dilemma of believing God in spite of our agonizing situation.

As I face this new era of increased pain and yet another phase of waiting, I find that my focus must truly remain on the sovereign Lord who helps me. By his power, I can set my face like stone, determined to do His will…and I will not be put to shame. That means there is no way out, only through.

Jesus demonstrated this perfectly. When He was headed to the cross to suffer and die for me, he did just that…set his face like a flint for Jerusalem knowing that it was “the Lord’s good plan to crush Him and to cause Him grief.” No way out for Christ…only through.  The good news for me is that Christ is not only the perfect example.  Because of His obedience, He is the perfect Savior–saving me from sin and death and from  my own fractured attempts to deal with life. I am broken. I am scared. I am sad to my core. But in the midst of all my raging emotions, I find the comfort of a Savior who has walked the path of suffering before me, and now walks it with me. For He is a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. And He sets my face like stone, giving me the determination to do His will and the confidence that I will not be put to shame.
