Proud of the Gospel of Christ

I was listening to a challenging and fascinating message on Romans 1:16 this morning. As I think of Paul ‘s statement, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” I am reminded again of how often we consider the gospel the message of God to the unsaved, when it is really so much more than that.

Paul was writing to Roman believers. Yet he said in verse 15 how much he longed to preach the gospel among them.  Why would Paul long to preach the gospel among believers if it is primarily a message for unbelievers? The gospel is amazing and fabulous news for those who are still drowning in their sin. But it is also amazing and fabulous news to us who have believed it, and been made right with God. It is indeed the power of God in our lives, that saves us from the pit of hell, saves us to a relationship with God, and saves us from a wasted life! The gospel makes it possible for us to walk in communion with Almighty God every day of our lives. When we consider the message of the gospel as merely the antidote for our eternal destination, we miss the bounty of God’s good news in Christ. God sent His Son to restore our relationship with Him, to pay the sin debt and rescue us from the power of sin and Satan. The gospel is at work in our lives every day, fulfilling in us our destiny–to glorify God, and enjoy Him forever. The gospel dispels God’s Glory in and through our lives!

Paul was using the literary devise of understatement when he said, “I am not ashamed of the gospel.” He meant it much like we might say, “Michael Jordan wasn’t a bad basketball player.” What Paul was really saying was, “I am downright, unequivocally, proud of the gospel of Christ!” When we are proud of something, we can’t keep our mouths shut about it. And Paul exemplified that. He was so delighted to be a messenger of Christ to the saved and the unsaved, that he couldn’t shut up about the gospel of Christ. And this is the only right and godly response to the gospel, for it is nothing short of the power of God at work among men.

What a great reminder to treasure the Gospel of Christ each day, for truly it does dispense the Glory of GOD in and through our lives!
