Overwhelmed at the Thought

The boys and I are still wading through Job. The other night we were reading Job’s sixth speech in chapter 19. By this time he has harshly rebuked his friends for their ill-treatment of him,  and decried God for “plunging his path into darkness.” Job is at the end of himself and his mourning has reach a most bitter point. He actually feels as if God has wronged him, and all his friends and family have denounced him. Then in verse 25, Job rekindles hope with these inspiring and oft repeated words, “But as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, and he will stand up on the earth at last.”  In spite of his feelings that God had actually turned against him, Job’s only hope was still found in his Redeemer. Just a few chapters before this Job had testified, “Though he slay me, yet will I trust Him.” Here again, he is coming back to that unswerving faith.  Job concludes his creed with these stunning words, “I will see Him for myself, yes I will see Him with my own eyes. I am overwhelmed with the thought.” Job’s hope was firmly placed in God. And his greatest expectation wasn’t for anything this life can give. He was set on seeing God. Nothing less would satisfy.

Job’s extreme suffering may have been a proving ground for God’s glory against Satan’s accusations, but it was also the arena in which Job discovered his greatest longing–not for security, not for wealth, not for family, friends or even his health but for God Himself. Often it seems, the cares of this life have to be stripped away before we realize our deepest need and longing is for God alone. And then seeing Him face to face becomes an overwhelming and compelling aspiration.
