Just Do It

The boys and I participate in an inner city ministry called Orlando Children’s Church on the Saturdays that we are home and able to go. It’s like one big, year round vacation Bible school for kids who might otherwise never hear about the love of Christ. Marshall and Jaden have really enjoyed this opportunity to learn and grow through giving of themselves. But it is often hard to fit into our schedule, especially because the drive is about 45 minutes one way. Recently we have been so busy we have not gone as regularly.  And  I have to admit that it is hard sometimes to give up my Saturday mornings after a busy week. I have so many other things I want to do.

Last week on Friday evening I realized I had finished everything that I had planned to work on Saturday, so I asked the boys if they wanted to go to OCC. Both of them said yes but not with as much enthusiasm as usual. I was debating whether or not it was worth my effort to get all the way down there with them if they weren’t enthusiastic about it, when Marshall made this insightful statement: “We should go, because the less we go, the less we want to. But when we go more often, then we really want to go.”

Again, God was using my children to remind me of an important principle.   We can give lip-service to valuing a certain ministry, or person, but if we do not invest, we do not really value.  Often, we just don’t value the things we should, and feel powerless to change that. But Jesus told us how to value what we should: “Store up for yourselves treasure in heaven, where moth and dust does not corrupt and thieves can’t break in and steal.” If we choose to invest in what Jesus values–namely Himself, His Word, and others–we will value those things, because Jesus also said, “Where your heart is, there your treasure will be also.”  Clearly, what we invest in, is what we value, and what we value, we will invest in.
