Earning a Good Reputation

“…All these people earned a good reputation because of their faith.” Hebrews 11:39. This verse refers to the myriad of individuals remembered as patriarchs of the faith, those Biblical characters who lived differently, who risked every comfort in this life, believing in a higher call.

The Great Hall of Faith–Hebrews 11. What a motley crew these people of faith were–Drunks, deceivers, prostitutes, adulterers, murderers, and suicidal ego-maniacs, just to mention a few.  But verse 39 says they earned a good reputation. They are not listed as debaucherers, adulterers, and thugs. Rather, they are listed as those who lived by faith. Their good reputation was the result of believing God! They had faith in God, and God used them to glorify His name among the peoples of the earth.  Hebrews 11 was written as a call to each of us, a challenge, that we live with the same unwavering faith as did this cloud of witnesses.  Their faith in God is a reminder to us, that God truly is enough. He can be trusted.

The people mentioned in Hebrews 11 were not seeking a good reputation. They were seeking God. Their passionate pursuit of Him is what landed them in this chapter, as holy examples to us. And God’s faithfulness to them, is what changed them from law-breaking, depraved, self-seeking individuals into a  cloud of cheering witnesses, urging us on to finish well, to keep the faith, and earn that good reputation as ones who single-mindedly follow Christ.
